Why I joined the Junior League...

Moving from New York City to John’s Creek, GA was a HUGE change for me! Not only was I recently married, buying my first home and starting a new job, I did not have many friends (or any family) in the greater Atlanta area.

I had a very basic understanding of The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. I had friends that were in different chapters (New York City, Montclair, NJ, etc.). My original perception of Junior League was that it was for stay-at-home moms who baked pies and wore pearls and heels (which was NOT me)! So, I never joined.

After moving to John’s Creek, I wanted to get involved in my new community, meet new friends and learn more about my town. My friends (in other AJLI chapters) encouraged me to seek out the local Junior League chapter. This is how I found The Junior League of Gwinnett and North Fulton Counties.

In Fall 2012, I attended my first JLGNF event: a recruitment brunch. There I met Renee, the Provisional Chair for JLGNF, who I connected with right away. Renee invited me to dinner that same night to meet two other Members: Lauren and Kristin, both young professionals like me. The discussions we had at dinner (over margaritas and queso dip) made me change my perception of what “Junior Leaguers” were like.

I joined the JLGNF in January 2013.  When I became an Active Member, I was hesitant about taking on a role that I would struggle with in terms of commitment due to the demands of my job. However, I learned quickly that there is a placement in JLGNF for everyone.  The JLGNF Board does a wonderful job at offering opportunities that work with all types of schedules. As an added benefit, you will meet amazing women and make lifelong friends.
